larry clark
.
he’s life was based on drink, drugs and getting laid, his
shots mainly based day to day life that no-one else saw, but the amazing thing
was it was his life that he shot. Some of his pictures are found disturbing,
but they have great effect to others.
This photo shows two people freely expressing themselves to
one another, the shot is in colour and the background looks like a normal room,
unlike some of his other shots that are dark and doll also based on the people
making a bigger effect.
this is Larry himself, showing that people back in the day
really didn’t care if things was illegal, they went with what they want to do,
the shot is in black and white, there’s nothing else like the background that
stands out, he wanted the shot to be on him, for people to look at the emotion
on his face, but to try and feel or see what he did in the shot, but this is
how he felt throughout his life.
Larry had seen many dreadful things in his life, but always
pulled out the camera to get a shot first, in 1971 Larry witnessed his best
friend shoot himself in the leg, they had all been taking drug’s and as he went
to remove the 'pistol' from his pocket it went off, it was all by accident but Larry
pulled out the camera while his friend and a girl sat there freaking out, Larry
said himself and I quote ' you have to turn pro and just do your job.'
Larry started photography in 1962, and the whole purpose of
it all was to make a film, but in the end he carried out and made a book, not
what he expected at all. Throughout the 1960s Clark shot photos from his youth
in Tulsa. The photos that he took portrayed people taking drugs, teenage sex
and also violence. At the age of 13 Larry
was taking shots of babies something to do with the family business, but he was
already on drugs by this age. By the time he was 16 Larry had a habit of
carrying his camera with him everywhere he went. His images were taken in black and white few
in colour, adding to the gritty realism to life and the placed he lived, in the
1960s.
Larry had done a lot of burning and dodging when making a
print and then use bleach. he said himself "when I’m photographing I
always try to shoot against the light, the film can't handle this and
everything gets burned up, since I’m exposing for the shadows." he likes
his photos to be dark and shadowy, sort of depressing in a way, but it gives
out the feel to the public eyes that he intended on. Larry was very pleased
with his photos, they never always came out perfect but that’s the result he
wanted, to show life is not what everyone thinks and that people get by no
matter how low or high they are.
