larry clark
.
he’s life was based on drink, drugs and getting laid, his shots mainly based day to day life that no-one else saw, but the amazing thing was it was his life that he shot. Some of his pictures are found disturbing, but they have great effect to others.

This photo shows two people freely expressing themselves to one another, the shot is in colour and the background looks like a normal room, unlike some of his other shots that are dark and doll also based on the people making a bigger effect.

this is Larry himself, showing that people back in the day really didn’t care if things was illegal, they went with what they want to do, the shot is in black and white, there’s nothing else like the background that stands out, he wanted the shot to be on him, for people to look at the emotion on his face, but to try and feel or see what he did in the shot, but this is how he felt throughout his life.

Larry had seen many dreadful things in his life, but always pulled out the camera to get a shot first, in 1971 Larry witnessed his best friend shoot himself in the leg, they had all been taking drug’s and as he went to remove the 'pistol' from his pocket it went off, it was all by accident but Larry pulled out the camera while his friend and a girl sat there freaking out, Larry said himself and I quote ' you have to turn pro and just do your job.'

Larry started photography in 1962, and the whole purpose of it all was to make a film, but in the end he carried out and made a book, not what he expected at all. Throughout the 1960s Clark shot photos from his youth in Tulsa. The photos that he took portrayed people taking drugs, teenage sex and also violence.  At the age of 13 Larry was taking shots of babies something to do with the family business, but he was already on drugs by this age. By the time he was 16 Larry had a habit of carrying his camera with him everywhere he went.  His images were taken in black and white few in colour, adding to the gritty realism to life and the placed he lived, in the 1960s.

Larry had done a lot of burning and dodging when making a print and then use bleach. he said himself "when I’m photographing I always try to shoot against the light, the film can't handle this and everything gets burned up, since I’m exposing for the shadows." he likes his photos to be dark and shadowy, sort of depressing in a way, but it gives out the feel to the public eyes that he intended on. Larry was very pleased with his photos, they never always came out perfect but that’s the result he wanted, to show life is not what everyone thinks and that people get by no matter how low or high they are.

fashion and portrait!

To what degree should an image manipulated to go into a fashion magazine?

No photo should be manipulated because to me it doesn't make the photo real, when being manipulated it causes great effect on young girls of today, there has been many weight issues over the last few years because of what modals look like. Many girls have become anorexic; end up depressed or even ended up on the deathbed. To be honest in my opinion, I think beauty is within natural things, its like having a skin product with natural liquids put into it, it will be good for your skin, where as if you put boosters or something into them it could make you go spotty, if you change anything in the world, you will always see a difference, no matter how big or little the change is. If fashions all about the cloths then they should not edit people at all, if they want it to be perfect then they should use dummies or shown in a different way, editing people can give them low self-esteem and make them change who they are or no reason at all apart from some picky people.

When is an image a Portrait when is it a fashion photograph?

You will always be able to tell when it’s a portrait or fashion photo as they are based on different things, fashion will always be based on the clothing item; the colour, size, texture and fit ect, where as portrait is based on the person in the photo and their facial expressions or emotions. It can also be based on a group of people, for example a family photo. Portraits are set up and the people are placed in position to show their different relationships, if a couple was in for a portrait they would be made to stand close, smile, maybe even kiss but this is all to show their love. They can wear whatever they feel best in, but most people dressed their best because it’s a portrait and you pay good money for them, as they are amazing quality and they are mainly placed in the homes of those who have had them done, mainly are sent to other members of the families as gifts. But portraits will be seen in house and magazines, to many are placed in magazines tho as magazines like to base pictures on fashion. I think they both have an inspiration to people, but at least with portrait you don’t have to worry about what people judging your looks and cloths, you can at natural and they are never edited to make yourself look skinny or look tanned or even remove spots ect. Where as fashion we all love the cloths or item that is being advertised and shown to us but many of the pictures have been airbrushed which to me shows how fake people can be and I think every and any photo that’s been taken should not be changed as when you snap that shot, that’s what you see and that’s the real beauty of it all.
